Food politics in children’s books

Living in the US has made me more aware of how politics slips into seemingly neutral aspects of society. These two children’s books made me laugh. The French one is from my own childhood. They present vivid difference in policy towards food produce. The US book ‘Libby Loves Science’ has corn syrup as the secret ingredient in her bubble mix, while France’s policies of protecting regions and the concept of ‘terroir’ means that in La Vache Orange (the orange cow) the cow sips a spot of Champagne to help her get better when she is a poorly.
